올 해 입시 트렌드에서 주목할만한 변화를 꼽자면 단연 미국 대법원의 Affirmative Action 폐지 판결이 가장 큰 화두입니다.
Affirmative Action은 “동의/긍정하는 행동” 이라는 뜻으로 미국에서 차별의 대상이 되어왔던 유색인종들에게 고용/교육 방면에서 혜택을 줌으로써 평등을 보장하자는 취지의 소수 인종 우대 정책이었는데요.
대학 입시에서는 입학 정원 중 일부를 특정 소수 인종(라틴계 미국인, 아시아계인, 아프리카계 미국인 등)으로 채우는 인종 쿼터제(racial quota)를 시행해오고 있었죠.
하지만 이렇게 ‘평등’에 기반한 인종 쿼터제는 대학 지원율이 높은 아시아계 학생들은 더 높은 경쟁률로, 그렇지 않은 타 소수 인종계 학생들은 비교적 낮은 경쟁률로 싸우게 하는 같은 인종끼리의 불평등한 경쟁으로 변질되었습니다.
이와 같은 이유로 Affirmative Action 정책을 폐지해야한다는 주장이 있었고,
올 해 6월 미국 대법원은 이 Affirmative Aciton을 위헌이라 판결하여 지금까지 이슈가 되고 있습니다.
이러한 대법원의 위헌 판결이 미국 입시에 어떤 바람을 불어오게 될 지 궁금한 분들이 많으실텐데요.
그 중 가장 직접적인 변화는 바로 대학교들의 essay prompt 변경입니다. 이미 몇 대학교들이 판결 이후 essay prompt를 변경하거나 추가했고, 이는 학교별로 추가 요구할 수 있는 Supplement Essay 를 통해 인종 다양성을 확보하고자 하는 조치로 보여집니다.
그 중 아래 대학교들의 예시를 통해 에세이 주제가 어떤식으로 변화했는지 살펴보겠습니다.
1. Harvard College
가장 대표적으로 하버드 대학교는 작년까지 이어온 한 개의 optional essay를 없애고, 올 해부터 200자 이내의 5개의 필수 답변 질문으로 supplement essay prompt를 변경했습니다.
- Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?
- Briefly describe an intellectual experience that was important to you.
- Briefly describe any of your extracurricular activities, employment experience, travel, or family responsibilities that have shaped who you are.
- How do you hope to use your Harvard education in the future?
- Top 3 things your roommates might like to know about you.
가장 첫번째인 1번부터 “diverse” “who you are”이라는 키워드/키프레이즈를 언급하면서 학생 고유의 이야기들을 듣고자 함을 알 수 있습니다.
2번 “intellectural experience,” 3번 “family responsibilities,” 그리고 5번 룸메이트에게 알려줄 내용에 대한 토픽들에도 모두 학생이 원한다면 자신의 배경에 대한 이야기를 담을 기회를 준 것으로 보입니다.
2. Johns Hopkins University
존스홉킨스 대학교는 에세이 주제를 변경한 것은 아니지만 이전부터 “identity”에 대한 질문을 해왔습니다.
Tell us about an aspect of your identity (e.g. race, gender, sexuality, religion, community, etc.) or a life experience that has shaped you as an individual and how that influenced what you’d like to pursue in college at Hopkins.
인종, 성별, 종교, 속한 집단 등의 자신의 배경 또는 삶의 경험에 대한 부분과 그러한 배경/경험이 JHU에서 어떻게 발휘될 것인지를 연결지어 답변 해야하는 주제입니다.
또한 JHU는 홈페이지에 “인종을 포함하여 학생의 어떤 배경적인 부분들도 원한다면 에세이의 답변으로 포함해도 좋다”고 기재하면서,
동시에 “이러한 정보는 대학교 차원에서 학생 본인의 삶과 경험에 영향을 준 요소로만 참고할 것임”을 덧붙였습니다.
“Any part of your background, including but not limited to your race, may be discussed in your response to this essay if you so choose … [but the information] will be considered by the university based solely on how it has affected your life and your experiences as an individual.”
3. Duke University
듀크 대학교는 2023-2024 원서에서 아래 5가지 질문 중 최대 2개까지 선택하여 작성, 제출할 수 있게 했는데요. (미선택 가능)
이러한 optional essay를 통해 학생 개인의 context/identity에 대한 스토리를 담을 수 있는 공간을 제공했습니다.
- We believe a wide range of personal perspectives, beliefs, and lived experiences are essential to making Duke a vibrant and meaningful living and learning community. Feel free to share with us anything in this context that might help us better understand you and what you might bring to our community.
- Tell us about an intellectual experience in the past two years that you found absolutely fascinating.
- We believe there is benefit in sharing and sometimes questioning our beliefs or values; who do you agree with on the big important things, or who do you have your most interesting disagreements with? What are you agreeing or disagreeing about?
- We recognize that “fitting in” in all the contexts we live in can sometimes be difficult. Duke values all kinds of differences and believes they make our community better. Feel free to tell us any ways in which you’re different, and how that has affected you or what it means to you.
- Duke’s commitment to inclusion and belonging includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Feel free to share with us more about how your identity in this context has meaning for you as an individual or as a member of a community.
Duke의 에세이 주제들에도 identity, background, experience 등이 키워드가 되고 있음을 볼 수 있죠.
4. Dartmouth College
다트머스 대학교의 세번째 에세이는 아래 두가지 주제 중 하나를 선택하여 작성하게 되어있습니다.
A. There is a Quaker saying: Let your life speak. Describe the environment in which you were raised and the impact it has had on the person you are today.
B. “Be yourself,” Oscar Wilde advised. “Everyone else is taken.” Introduce yourself.
A 옵션은 위 세 대학교들의 주제와도 꽤나 비슷합니다. 이 질문에서도 학생이 원한다면 자신의 고유한 배경에 대한 스토리를 충분히 풀어낼 수 있습니다.
5. University of Massachusetts, Amherst
메사추세츠 주립대학교 앰허스트 대학교의 에세이 주제에서도 배경에 대한 부분이 강조 되었는데요.
At UMass Amherst, no two students are alike.Our communities and groups often define us and shape our individual worlds. Community can refer to various aspects, including shared geography, religion, race/ethnicity, income, ideology, and more. Please choose one of your communities or groups and describe its significance. Explain how, as a product of this community or group, you would enrich our campus. (100 words)
위 주제들 중 존스홉킨스 주제와 가장 비슷하게 ‘당신이 어떤 배경을 가진 사람이고, 그로 인해 어떤 사람이 되었으며, 이러한 요소들이 우리 학교에 어떤 영향을 줄 수 있는지’를 묻는 주제입니다.
6. Emory University
에모리 대학교의 2023-2024 원서 추가 에세이 주제들에도 학생의 문화적 배경에 대한 질문이 옵션으로 들어가 있습니다.
- Which book, character, song, monologue, or piece of work (fiction or non-fiction) seems made for you? Why?
- Reflect on a personal experience where you intentionally expanded your cultural awareness.
- Emory University aspires for all students to flourish on campus. Reflect on what flourishing at Emory means to you.
- Emory University’s unique mission calls for service to humanity. Share how you might personally contribute to this mission of service to humanity.
- Emory University has a strong commitment to building community. Tell us about a community that you have been part of where your participation helped to change or shape the community for the better.
- Reflection is a central tenet of Emory University’s values. Craft a personal email providing advice to yourself in your first year of high school.
이 대학들을 제외하고도 학생의 배경에 대한 질문을 포함하고 있는 대학들은 꽤나 많습니다.
Affirmative action 폐지라는 하나의 사회 이슈를 넘어서, 미국이라는 나라가 얼마나 다양성(diversity)과 고유성(uniqueness)에 큰 가치를 두고 있는지를 알 수 있죠.
대학들의 이 공통된 에세이 주제는 인종, 종교, 문화적 요소들로 영향을 받아 형성된 개인의 고유한 정체성(identity)을 가지고 해당 학교에 어떻게 기여할 것인가에 대한 질문으로 귀결되고, 결국 이 질문에 대한 답변은 왜 다른 누구도 아닌 나를 합격시켜야 하는지를 설명할 기회가 됩니다.
Affirmative Action 폐지 이전에 우스갯소리로 그런 얘기가 있었지요. 한국인 지원자들은 공부만 잘하고 모두 비슷하고 평범하다는 편견/프레임을 피하기 위해 ‘아시아계 학생’스럽지 않은 에세이를 써야하고, 피아노나 바이올린을 해서는 안되며, 이민이나 유학 이야기를 쓰면 절대 안된다는 등의 조언들. 아주 근거가 없는 말들은 아니지만 시작점이 틀렸다고 봅니다.
누군가의 입맛에 맞추려고 하다 보면 결국 본질을 잃기 마련입니다.
똑같이 피아노를 쳤어도 누군가는 매 주 학원다니고 리사이틀 한 따분한 이야기를 담고, 누군가는 그 안에 자신만이 가진 스토리를 담습니다.
누군가는 가난해서 힘들었던 얘기를 구구절절 풀어내고, 누군가는 모두가 포기할 법한 상황에서 위기를 기회로 만들어 낸 자신의 전략가적인 기질과 실행력을 흥미롭게 풀어냅니다.
결국 본질은 유니크한 스토리에 있습니다.
유니크한 것을 가지고 있거나, 유니크하게 풀어내거나,
둘 중 하나라도 되어야 ‘비슷비슷한 아시아인 중 하나’라는 편견을 깰 수 있겠죠.
